Wall Art

Wood rarely comes to mind when one thinks of wall art, as it is more traditionally thought to include framed paintings, prints, or photographs. But wood can be used in many different artistic ways when made into decor for your wall.  While there is simply natural beauty in the wood itself, when transformed into a piece of art to display on a wall, it differs from traditional art forms in that it can be three dimensional and has texture - just like a sculpture. It begs us to run our fingers across its surfaces, satisfying our sense of touch as much as it satisfies our sense of sight...to physically immerse ourselves in it. Wood wall art can be mesmerizing.

Unlike paintings and photographs that can be made into prints and reproduced over and over, every piece of wall art made from wood is an original piece. Any particular design can be remade and enjoyed by more than one person, just like reprints of paintings or photographs. Those that are remade may not be the first, but they are still an original, crafted by my hands.  One of the amazing features of wood is that even when remaking a piece (whether furniture or wall art) using the same type of wood, each can look a little different from the others as the grain pattern, texture, and color tone will always be a little different from tree to tree and board to board, giving even reproductions a certain amount of unique character.  If I remake a piece of wall art each is numbered to identify it separately from the others.

Jericho #1

The design theme of this piece had no one source of inspiration, but was simply born out of a creative moment. Unlike some other forms of contemporary art, there is nothing culturally, socially, or politically symbolic about it.  It was just meant to be artfully designed and created with some artistic interpretation of a crumbling wall. To be mesmerizing and contemplative to whomever views it.

The name did not come first, revealing itself later as the design evolved and came together.... named after the infamous City of Jericho. Heavens wrath rained down and the walls of Jericho fell.

The frame and backer panel are maple with walnut miter splines adding decorative contrast to the outside corners while providing important structural support. The "stones" making up the wall are composed of maple, walnut, cherry, red oak, butternut, and red elm.

It measures 16" wide by 20" high and stands proud of the wall 1 1/2".
